The Greatham Foundation (formerly The Hospital of God) is an established charitable organisation rooted in compassion, community, and care. Established in 1273, we are one of the UK’s oldest charities, with over 750 years of proud service supporting people across the North East of England.
With deep historical roots and an ambition for future impact, The Greatham Foundation benefits from a permanent endowment comprising land, property assets, and financial investments. With a balance sheet of £52m, the charity has a robust foundation which enables us to deliver our charitable mission and adapt to the changing needs of our communities.
We offer a broad range of high-quality services focused on care, support, and housing—particularly for older people and those living with dementia. Our core activities include:
- Residential care for older people at Stichell House Residential Home, a purpose built 35 bed facility set in the beautifully landscaped grounds at Greatham
- Dementia care and support, including Day Centres, family support, and community-based activities throughout Hartlepool and East Durham.
- Information, guidance, and advocacy through our Dementia Advisory Service in Hartlepool.
Supported housing through our historic Almshouses in Greatham, Norton, Stockton, and other parts of the North East. - Grant-making to voluntary, community, and not-for-profit organisations that enhance the lives of people in our communities.
The current Director (Chief Executive Officer), who has successfully led the organisation through a significant period of transformation and stabilisation over the past seven years, is now stepping down. At the same time, the Head of Finance will also be moving on after making a substantial contribution to strengthening the charity’s financial strategy and governance.
